How to register as a Taxpayer (Individuals)

Individuals who are liable to pay income tax (whose assessable income for a month exceeds Rs. 250,000 per month or Rs. 3,000,000 for a year of assessment), are required to register and obtain Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) in order to pay Income Tax on a quarterly basis.

There are two methods;

  1. Manually
  2. Online

How to register manually (Due to the current situation [COVID-19] not possible)

  1. Obtain the application form for taxpayer registration from your nearest IRD office or download it from the IRD portal at www.ird.gov.lk. This form will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

  2. Submit your completed application form together with the supporting documents to your nearest IRD office.
    1. Supporting Documents
      1. Recent pay sheet/ Proof of Income (Optional)
      2. Photocopy of the National Identity Card (NIC) / Passport (Mandatory)
      3. If the address is different from NIC/Passport, it is required to submit a proof of address (Mandatory);
        • Driving License
        • Address confirmation from GramaNiladari or
        • Billing proof (eg: Electricity Bill / Water Bill / Telephone Bill / Bank Statement)
  3. You can collect the Tax Registration Certificate (TIN) & PIN (RAMIS Login) on the same day / Department of Inland Revenue will post the same to your registered address.

How to register online

  1. Access www.ird.gov.lk and go to e-Services > Access to e-Services. Select the “Taxpayer Registration” e-Service.
  2. It is required to complete the application online.
  3. Attached the supporting documents;
    1. Supporting Documents
      1. Recent pay sheet/ Proof of Income (Optional)
      2. Photocopy of the National Identity Card (NIC) / Passport (Mandatory)
      3. If the address is different from NIC/Passport, it is required to submit a proof of address (Mandatory);
        • Driving License
        • Address confirmation from GramaNiladari or
        • Billing proof (eg: Electricity Bill / Water Bill / Telephone Bill / Bank Statement)
  4. After completion of the same you will receive an acknowledgement of your submission. Take note of the acknowledgement number in case you need to follow up with IRD on your registration.
  5. Department of Inland Revenue will email the Tax Registration Certificate (TIN) and PIN (RAMIS Login) to your given email address.
